Tomatoes dying... any ideas?

by Nick
(US)

I'm new to this and have a problem. The tomato plant (12") I have is healthy on top, but the lower limbs continue to die off from the end toward the stem. Any ideas? I've went thru the t.shooting guide and my system seems to be in line. Thanks for any help.

probably not a problem

As long as the stem stays green, and the upper portion stays green and healthy, you probably are just dealing with nature, and not actually a problem. I assume that the plants are indeterminate?

By the sounds of it the plant is not getting enough light down low. If you are using a fluorescent light it will most likely not have enough power to keep good light to the bottom of the plant. I would try switching to an HID light set up. Get an HPS ballast and light for flowering your tomatoes. Just then get Metal Halide conversion bulbs for the system while you are in the vegetative stage of growth. When it comes time to flower you just switch the bulbs. This is by far cheaper and less time consuming to do it this way rather than switching out ballasts. It will give you all the light you need. Also make sure (if you can) set up reflective walls as to not waste any light. If you get some Mylar or flat white material you will bounce back a lot of light and the bottoms of your plants should come right back to life!! Good luck!!
