T5 Lamps good for lettuce?

by Steve
(U.S.)

Noticed in a few comments that a T-5 setup would be good for lettuce. Is this true for all stages of growing? Will the T-5 also work for Kale/Spinach/Swiss Chard? Would the HPS/MH be better for greens or would the T-5 be on par with it?

Would a T-5 light work well for Beets?

In terms of sq ft/price, is the HPS/MH setup cheaper than the T5?

Thanks for any response :)

Answer from Stella/Simon:

Hi Steve,

T5s are ideal for lettuce, all stages of growing. Also all you need for kale, spinach, Swiss chard, or any of the leafy greens. It provides the perfect spectrum for them, and puts out almost no heat so you can hang them right over the greens. I'm pretty sure it would also suffice for beets, though I have never grown beets. A quality T5 lamp is a little cheaper than the HID setups, but not much. Your lamp will probably be your most expensive item.

Hope this helps!
Simon
