Stunted seedlings

Love your site and need your help!

Having issue growing plants. Have been unsuccessfully able to grow lettuce, broccoli, and peppers indoors from seeds. I keep LED light(Prosource 90w) approx 24" from plants for the 1 1/2 weeks and slowly move to within 6" by the beginning of week 3. I am using 2 different mediums to start seeds(STG & Rockwool) with 1/4 strength General Hydro nutrients. Plants seem to have stunted growth and I have not been able to move the plants to a bigger tank because of growth. Need some help! Most people I talk to tell me to get any from the LED's until the technology matures but I am a novice grower and I am unsure what to do. Any advice?

Answer from Stella/Simon:

Hi Kevin,

Place inexpensive fluorescent lamps just a couple inches above the seed blocks for a nice start. When transitioning to growth stage, you'll want to use HID lighting for best results. I concur with staying away from LEDs at this time.

Good luck!
Stella

Hope this helps!

Using nutes too early.
by: Mark from Junkos Garden

Try starting out your seeds with plain, pH balanced water for the first 2 weeks. You need to allow the seedlings to develop a good root structure before feeding with nutes. Otherwise they will not develop roots in search for nutrients. I know you are new and its fun to measure out the notes and such but you have to be patient. Try starting some new seeds with plain water and wait until you can start to see the roots coming out of the rockwool. Then feed them at a 1/4 strength for another week or two then moving on to the regular feeding schedule strength. Remember most lettuce only need to be at about 800 ppm at the highest strength. So you may start thinking about mixing different batches for you other types of plants to accommodate their needs. Good luck!
