Starting out in Alaska

by Leslie
(Kodiak, Alaska)

Hello,

I am starting out my own indoor hydroponic garden in Alaska mainly because our growing season is so short it is one of the only options for me. Daylight in the summer wont be an issue and due to huge windows in my livingroom, it gets to be about 75 degrees. I have grow lamps for winter. I guess my question would be is there anyone else around here living in Alaska that had a successful garden? I know that things need to be different up here than in the lower 48 and I am asking for whatever tips I can get from other Alaskan farmers on the site. The garden will never see the outdoors because it rarely if ever gets about 65 degrees in my yard. Any help or advice would be fantastic.

Answer from Stella/Simon:

Hi Leslie,
Here I am, passing the word for you. Hey all you Hydro freaks up in Alaska! Your advice is needed.

Leslie, I think hydroponics would be absolutely ideal for a extremely cold and short growing region like yours. Best of luck to you, write back and let us know how you're doing. :-)

Hope this helps!

Alaska here too
by: Steph

I'm in Alaska here too - we started a tent in our extra room - actually 2 of them. We just started hydro tomatoes and peppers and LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

Our plants will never go outside. I can't wait to keep growing. Great results so far.

In Alaska

Leslie, I too have started hydroponic gardening this year. I've had great success with many different herbs and vegetables in my aeroflo and ebb and flow systems. Basil, cilantro, shiso, cucumbers lettuce etc... I use LED lights for my indoor garden. They work great and are very energy efficient. the only draw back is the cost to purchase (about $500 for a 500 Watt light) I hope more people get into growing indoors. Good luck to you.
