Sediment in tank?

by Dave Lamplot
(Coloma, MI)

Thank you Stella/Simon for the advice on adding nutrients for my granddaughters science fair project, but have another concern. Should explain the dwc system we have. A 10 gallon aquarium with cardboard on all sides with a closeable window in front for viewing and a 10" airstone. Today we noticed what looks like a light coating of sediment on the airstone and on the bottom of the tank. We washed growing medium, pots, tank and foam. Did we do something wrong or is this normal, plants seem to be doing fine.

Thanks again for any advice, Papa Dave

Answer from Stella/Simon:
Hey, Dave,
This is an easy one. There is always a thin layer of sediment in the bottom of our nutrient tanks. Not really sure why this happens, but it always does and never seems to affect the plants.

So... carry on!
Good luck with the project, I hope she gets first place. Please send us a picture in the "Brag Pics" page when the plants are mature, she would probably like to see her project posted on the internet.

Hope this helps!
