Saving Money on Gen Hydro Nutrients With A PPM Meter
by RAPTOR SOARING
I have separate water farm buckets that I use only rain, compost tea and GH nutes and I too have found that GH recommends very high concentrations and too often scheduled changes.
With a ppm meter I monitor the levels daily and record it. I add only rain or compost tea to top off between changes. After six days some ppm readings will start to drop some take ten or so to exhibit a drop of over a hundred ppm. I wait until the reading is over two hundred and fifty lower than the start to change the nutes.
Once the readings start to drop , they go down fast. Fifty to a hundred a day is common. But for the first week they hardly move, if at all.
The ppm that GH recommends is unnecessarily high, in my experience starting with 10 to 15 % less is okay , no noticeable differences. 1000 to 1100 works fine.
A ten dollar ppm meter paid for itself in no time at all.
