Root mold

Some of my plants roots seem to be molding before they reach the water. I'm talking about the roots coming from the side of the net pots in particularly. The roots coming from the bottom seem to be fine and are in water. Don't know why roots are molding, please help.

Hi, trying to visualize what is going on in your garden. What kind of setup do you have? Is this a lettuce raft, or bucket bubbler, NFT?
