PVC vs. Metal gutters???

by Jim Cullen
(South Carolina)

I'm questioning the use of PVC tubing and the leaching of BHPs or other plastics into the water as opposed to using metal downspouts for carrying water to plants? Does anyone have a response to this question?

Don't use metal
by: Charles

Most metals are incompatible with nutrient solutions. Toxic metals can be leached out into the nutrient solution that would be harmful to the plants and maybe to you. Steel would not be harmful but would corrode in a short time as would most other metals. Even aluminum would be a problem. Use plastic. It won't hurt you. Stainless steel is the only metal I would use in a hydro system that is exposed to the nutrient.
