Problems Starting Seedlings

by Mark
(Cincinnati)

Hi,

Started tomato and pepper seedlings in rockwool in a domed
seedling chamber.

Planted 2 tomato seeds each in five cubes soaked in a weak
nutrient solution (Florgrow, 1/4 teaspoon of the three
nutrient concentrates in gallon of distilled water).
Also, two pepper seeds each in three rockwool cubes.

I put the grow chamber on a heating pad set on low under
a fluorescent grow light. Temperature monitor on the
top of the chamber indicates the temperature is 74 degrees F.

Its been two weeks and only two tomato plants have emerged.

Questions:

1) How long does it usually takes for seeds to generate?

2) Do seeds age? The tomato seeds were from a pack leftover
from a package we bought last year. Were kept in their
original envelope in a drawer. The pepper seeds were kept
and dried from some red sweet peppers we bought from a
farmers market and really liked.

3) I left the cubes sitting in a 1/4 inch of the plant
nutrient solution. Was this a mistake?

Thanks,

Mark

Starting Seedlings
by: Wayne Schultz

Fresh new seed will germinate at about 80%+/-. Fresh tomato seed will germinate in about four days in rockwool with just pH neutral water at a temperature of 80 degrees. After garmination nutrients can be added.

Old seed should have been kept in a refrigerator chiller drawer, not in room warm temperatures, especially in a drawer. In warm temperature storage, germination levels will drop substantially.

Seed Starting

Seeds have an expiration date on the package, so some may not germinate when old, you should not use any ferts at all on starting seed, only do that when the plant have 2 true leaves on them.
Check the pack, it will tell you how long it takes to sprout, sometimes they are kept to wet
Good Luck

My Rockwool Issue
by: keithbishop.today

I found that placing seeds in rockwool to be much less effective than starting them in wet paper towels. Germination seems to be much faster this way and I just place the sprouts into the cube and drop it in a net pot.
