my top heavy plants
by Gary Barnett
I have a 6 location tote that I am trying to grow 2 kale plants, 2 lettuce plants and 2 sw. chard. I will test the ph with the liquid Gen. hydro. test kit with the up and down bottles every morning. I get a green sample after I drop in 4 drops of the test indicator. I place just ONE drop of the "down" bottle in the tank holding 2 1/2 gal. of water which has the 3 bottle Gen. Hydro. flora mix, after placing the one drop in the tank, I wait one hour or so before I test again, and it turns out pinkish red. I cannot get an amber color after placing the one drop in the tank. That tells me that in order to get amber, which the normal ph, I would have to add half a drop, which can't be done. My kale and sw. chard will not stand up after less than 2 weeks old from germination. I have a fan which is placed far enough away that only stirs the leaves. I have them inside. My air stone puts out plenty of bubbles. The stone is a 4" hockey puck shape so is plenty large enough for a tote which is 13"x 9". My lights are 2-24" T5's which are 2-4" away from the plants. Can you tell me why I am not getting an amber color, (normal ph) during my test, and why my plants are falling over? Thank you for your time. Gary.
If the test is pinkish-red, you need to add pH UP, not pH down. You were probably fine with the greenish color. Sometimes you can really get into a "chasing game". Try to get it yellow or greenish, then only test twice a week.
Hope this helps,
