My First Hydro System

I'm sure most of you have heard this question posed a thousand different ways and have answered it too many times to count. I have scoured the interwebs in search of what system will work best for me with my specific situation and what I have available to me, and I have narrowed it down to two options. I am considering both an Ebb and Flow system as well as a Nutrient Film Technique system. Both systems, I think, will allow me to get my feet wet in the world of hydroponics and allow me to learn a thing or two in the process. I do not plan on building a large unit just yet, I am just wanting something just large enough to experiment with.

I have ample space on my back patio which receives quite a bit of light (it is not covered). As mentioned before, I was looking into the Ebb and Flow system as well as the NFT system. For the Ebb and Flow I was considering using 4" PVC pipe, a total of 10 feet constructed in a U shape where I can have my "fill" nozzle on one end and the "overflow" on the other end, both within a reasonable distance from the reservoir. I was initially worried about the timer and how high to put the drain... etc. which was pushing me away from the Ebb and Flow. On the other hand, the NFT system sounded appealing because once you have your stream of water flowing, everything is gravy. There is my input, and here are the questions that I have:

1. Which system will allow me to learn the ins and outs of hydroponics as a newbie?

2. Which of the two systems will allow me to add onto it later easier?

3. What kind of medium should I use?

What type of Sysytem First
by: Memwl

I would go with the ebb and flow, however it would be easy to add to the nft.
them, Ebb Flow is a little more safer because in PVC some plant roots can get so large it plugs the pipe and that can be a problem, when the liquid level and flow is not adequate, they can be a big problem however they are the fastest growing of the systems from what I have experienced, the ebb and flow can accomodate a more diverse set of plants at the same time, you can mix them in PVC pipe also but each has a different set of root zone requirements because they sit on a table they can be moved and exchanged easily., setting the flod height is pretty much universal, I let mine come a little above the half pot line which I put on every pot.
It also depends on the growing media you are using
The type that wick wont need much of a flood level, clat media would be wet almost to the top.

Good Luck

NFT system. 95 plants 7'X10' system
by: Anonymous

I have 95 plants in a NFT system out of 5 )10' X 4" pvc pipes. I'm 10 weeks into my system and have been eating lettuce every day. Go to my video on YouTube. Mycle2313@gmail.com. I would be happy to tell you what I used and can actually send you my Grodan Pp reports to tell you the amount if nutrients I used every week.
