Hi Earl,

Yes, you could use just a regular fluorescent lamp to grow leafy vegs like lettuce and basil, or spinach. But you will get the best, most luxuriant growth with the newest generation of fluoro light, the T5. This bulb has a wider spectrum of light that plants love and respond well to.
