Enclosed Porch, Emily's Garden & The Root Spa
(Smithville, MS, USA)
Newbie to Hydroponics: Would like to put my garden in my enclosed porch, I have an air conditioner as I live in northeastern Mississippi, high humidity & hot (and heat unit for winter.) I sit in my porch on swing etc. & with company sometimes. There is a door to carport and backyard; I let my dog out these doors for her times outside. Do you think I’ll have problems because of these things?
Also, I didn’t find your site until after I had purchased my Emily’s Hydroponic Garden (don’t know your opinion on this one.) I’m really excited about Hydroponics, I don’t do heat/humidity well, am older and my back and legs can’t to the planting and weeding of a traditional garden, I believe this is my answer! I’ve been looking at The Root Spa by Ronald Kleinman to expand my garden when I’m ready, do you consider this a good system? Thanks for your help! DC
Answer from Stella/Simon:
Your enclosed porch sounds ideal to me! The fact that you like to sit in there means you will enjoy your garden that much more, and will be more attentive to problems that might arise.
Is your porch very sunny? It would be good to add to natural sunlight to your supplemental hydroponics lighting for a garden. Just make sure it doesn't get too hot in there, as the nutrient solution and entire garden does much better when the nutrients are cool (like in the 70s degree). So use sunshades/air-conditioning on the really hot days.
The last consideration is, if the door is opened frequently, you may let some insects in. This is no big deal, but you'll have more pests to battle than someone who has a garden in a back bedroom.
Good luck to you Dawn, hydroponics is certainly a great alternative to someone who is not able to kneel, squat and weed a big garden outside. I wish you good luck and happy gardening!
PS: I am not familiar with the Root Spa. If you have good luck with it, why not write back and let me know about it?
Hope this helps!
