ebb and flow drainage concern

by Austen

Hi, I am a newcomer to hydroponics, and I just built my first ebb and flow system. I used a heavy duty 8 gal meat lug for my flood tray, and used a generic drain/fill fitting like the one seen here:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002738JQ/ref=oh_details_o04_s02_i06?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The problem is that when i turn my pump off not all of the water drains out of the flood tray; I am left with about 1/2". I have tried leveling it as best as possible but to no avail there is always some solution left. In fear of root rot, and also to give my plant's roots more room to grow I have put a few square dowels lengthwise in the bottom of the tray and I set my pots on these. With this setup my pots are completely out of the solution after draining but I am concerned that the water pooling will lead to algae growth or stagnant water or just be bad in someway. I am looking for an experienced growers opinion, please. Also, the guide I read on this site recommends flooding 3 times daily but my 50/50 coco/pearl mixture feels very very wet. I would hate to overwater them.

Not to worry
by: Stella

Hi Austen,

Don't worry about that little bit of water left in the bottom of the flood bed. It will not get stagnant, because each time you have a flood cycle, it will be flushed with fresh nutrient solution from the reservoir.

Soundslike you've already taken steps to keep the plants roots up out of the residual solution.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about this at all.

Also, as far as number of times to cycle each day, if in a hot, dry environment you might have to cycle four times. If in a temperature controlled, air-conditioned room, two cycles a day might suffice. We recommend three as a good compromise.

The good thing about Hydro is you can experiment. If you pay close attention daily, you won't kill anything but you will quickly find what works best for your system.

Hope this helps!
