Easy Ebb and Flow with a humidity tray

Is there an Ebb and Flow system that is small but looks nice like this?
Hello,
In looking through all the different products and set ups on this page and others...
Is there anything wrong with using a humidity tray that has its own drain as a pseudo ebb and flow set up?
The real reason I am asking is because we want to start off light and get more and more into it... but I know my wife will like the look humidity trays (Especially the ones that are in nice wooden case)
Any thougts?
Kind regards,
BD

Answer from Stella/Simon:
Hi BD,
The great thing about hydro is that it lends itself well to recycling and scrounging or adapting of equipment. You can make a tray table of anything you want.
Just keep these points in mind for an ebb & flow system:
* Must be water tight and water proof. The nutrient solution is even a little caustic, that is why plastic trays are usually used.
* Must be strong enough to hold and support a fully flooded tray (water weighs much more than you think)
* must be adaptable to the plumbing (pump hose and drain) to allow the flood and drain cycles.
I am not familiar with a "humidity tray" like your picture. Perhaps you could use it as a table or stand and retrofit it with a sturdy plastic tray? I hate to tell you it will work itself as a drain table, as wood would not be water tight.
Good luck and hope this helps!
