Cucumber/squash failure.......

by Christi
(Fort Walton Beach, FL)

Hello all,

I have 3, inside hydroponic systems that I made last March that are working fairly well. The lettuce rafts are great, no problems there. I have a medium sized Ebb and flow with 1 tomato plant, 2 pepper plants, 1 summer squash, 2 cucumbers, and an eggplant. The tomato is doing ok, doesn't produce many fruits but is still producing slowly. The peppers are good. My squash just died out of the blue and so did my cucumbers?!?! My eggplant is flowering but no fruit. I don't know if they need a different nutrient concentration or more or less feedings? I would appreciate any advice please. I am using a 400 watt HID light for the Ebb and flow.

thank you,

CW

Could be anything
by: Stella

Hi Christi,

This may sound like a copout, but the squashing cucumbers dying could have been just about anything, from wrong temperature/humidity, to wrong nutrient concentration, to incorrect lighting.

As far as lack of fruit on the tomatoes, this could be fertilization problem.

1. Is this garden inside or on a patio?
2. What is the temperature of the nutrient solution, and the ambient room temperature? How about humidity?
Ideal temps for hydroponics range about 75° to 90°. Tomatoes and squash like it on the warm side, but sustained temps in the 90s can kill them.
Contrary to popular opinion, high humidity is not good for vegetables, and can retard growth and/or fruiting. Ideal humanity for hydroponics is 50-80% RH (relative humidity), with 50% being the best.

Hope this helps!

Hi Stella, thanks for writing. The garden is inside, the room temperature stays in the low 80's, the humidity is between 50 and 60%. The temp of solution is cool to the touch, not sure of exact temp. I was wondering if the plant requirements of cucumber and squash is too different from tomato and peppers and should be in a separate space.? The cucumber (greenhouse type) produced for a little while and I picked one before it up and died. The squash had finally one baby on it but died quickly also.

Thanks for your time,

Christi

Cucumber/Squash
by: MeMwl

This is a different subject cucurbit's is the family you are dealing with, They can cross pollinate and you can get a different fruit, cucumbers and squash are the same family, you should grow only one type at a time.

I am a Master Gardner and I have experienced this
with a melon crossing with an Armenian cucumber mainly because they are both considered melons

What did the 'dying' look like?
by: Chris

Aloha Christi,
To help diagnose...as I have grown cucumber, peppers and tomatoes all on the same reservoir nutrient solution through Nutrient Film technique trays with no problem and fruiting etc on all plants without problem. So my follow up question is when you say they up and died; what did the dying look like? the squash it sounds like the fruit was first to go..? The cucumber you said you got fruit from but then it up and died.. did the cucumber and or squash have fruit developing when the plant kicked the bucket too? Or was it simply foliage remaining before they died? Did you notice any rotting, blackening of the leaves? Or was it green, wilt and then just could not survive? How fast are we talking too?
Thanks!

Which technique used?
by: Bilal Ghayad

Hello;

Sounds good that you did growing for cucumber, tomato and peppers using same reservoir successfully. Can you please advise which hydroponic technique you used? Was it NFT with rockwool cubes or it was by top drip with stonewool? And it was inside greenhouse or outside? Did you depend on sunlight mainly or in the industrial light? One important point: the gully dimensions and if it is rectangular or circle?
Regards
Bilal
