Aeroponic Plants are Dying

by mike

Hello! This is my first attempt at gardening. I built an Aeroponic planter from a 26 gallon tan storage container. I put two cherry tomatoes in front and two beefsteak in back. The lighting I used are 2 grow UFOs. There is 4,300 foot candles at top of the plants and 190 foot candles at the bottom of the plants. The room temp is 76F and 61 humidity and the solution is 70f. My solution is Ionic grow at 1500 ppm with molasses with a PH from 5.8 to 6.5 and my media are clay pellets. At first the plants were looking good. All plants were showing roots out of the bottom of the net cups, but then all of a sudden the beefsteak leaves started curling and drying up and twisting. All the leaves look like little hand rolled cigarettes. I unrolled the leaves and looked with a magnifying glass and there were no bugs, no change in color though. The cherry's did not show any symptoms and the roots exploded and grew way down to the solution, but the roots on the beefsteak stopped growing. A week went by and now the cherry leaves are curling down and drying up, too. I am trying to figure out the problem so I do not make the same mistake again. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Answer from Stella/Simon:

Hi Mike,
This sounds very much like wilt disease. Did you buy your seedlings from a nursery? They may have already been infected. As we say on the diseases page, you might want to try treating the wilts with DCM Bio-Fungus, but honestly, it is best to just get all the diseased plant OUT of your hydro setup, and disinfect well before starting your next new garden.

Read about wilts and also tobacco mosaic disease here:

Hope this helps!

no molasses for hydro
by: Anonymous

i´ve heard that molasses is not good for hydro...molasses can increase negative microbial activity also try to keep the resevoir cool with ice cubes or even better big bottles with 80-90% of iced water during hot summer days.
